Mayweather vs McGregor Fight Draws Crowd, and Criticism

In what is being called the “Biggest Fight in Combat Sports History” Floyd Mayweather defeated Connor McGregor in a technical knockout during the tenth round on Saturday, August 26, 2017. The fight took place at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada and was broadcast worldwide breaking pay per view records, drawing a volley of social media reaction, and even criticism from the British Boxing Professional.

While many expected boxing champ Floyd Mayweather to win, Connor McGregor, who was coming from an MMA background, dominated the first eight rounds. During the ninth and tenth rounds, however, McGregor became too tired to defend himself and referee Robert Byrd called the match.

After the fight, Mayweather revealed that he had expected McGregor to fatigue after several rounds and that the early rounds were fought with the strategy of tiring out his opponent.  As the winner, Mayweather added to his undefeated 50-0 streak and received the “Money Belt”, an Italian alligator leather belt encrusted with gold, diamonds, sapphires and emeralds.

Critics and fans alike took to social media to express respect for McGregor and their surprise at the turnout. While experts immediately, and some fans, projected that Mayweather would come out victorious, McGregor’s early lead did leave some people uncertain until the last two rounds.
