The World is Watching WURLD: He Speaks Unity in African Mainstream, Mission and Creativity
I was yesterday years old when I turned on WURLD and listened to his entire EP straight through. WURLD is known as one of the powerhouses of Africa's sound. He has created a sound that's unlike no other. We sat down and had a conversation that would open the doors for many African artists and sounds to come.
Our conversation kicked off with a look into the most important aspect of his career, his creativity.
(Nia Rice): Tell us about your creative process when approaching the AfroSoul EP.
(WURLD): My creative process for ‘Afrosoul’ was free in the essence of celebration, breakthrough, and experiences. It introduces a different side of afrobeat, a new perspective which is the medium between afrobeat, RnB & soul.
(NR): If you had to choose, what was your favorite project to create and why?
(W): My favorite project to create was afro soul. It’s different from my last 2 projects. It was an opportunity for me to show my fans and myself that the love we share through music is here to stay, also being able to create more classic music for years to come.
(NR): Who are some of your most prominent musical influences and who would you like to collaborate within the near future?
(W): Michael Jackson, Kanye West, Sade Adu, Seal. In the near future, I’d like to collaborate with Kendrick Lamar.
(NR): How do you feel about the current state of African artists reaching the mainstream platform?
(W): I feel like we are in a great space because the world is watching, and I believe through unity and collaboration, we can achieve more than we have in the previous years.
(NR): With the current state of our revolution, where do you think your place and mission is within the culture? How do you plan on using your talents and wisdom to guide your fans to awareness?
(W): I think I add a new and fresh perspective to the term afrobeat. I feel like my sound in the future.
I intend to guide my fans to awareness mainly by being sensitive to what is going on around the world and making sure I am using my voice to lead my followers in the right direction, share valid info and motivate them this period through my music.
