5.3 earthquake shakes up Italy.

After the area was hit with a rare but powerful snowfall, Italy was buried in snow. When Italy was rocked by several earthquakes, it triggered a deadly avalanche. In order to put the magnitude of the earthquake into perspective, the earthquake that rocked central Italy was 5.7 on the Richter scale and the strongest ever recorded was 9.5. The region was hit by several more on Wednesday, January 18.

The structure most damaged by the avalanche was the Hotel Rigopiano which sits at the foot of a mountain chain in the central Italian region of Abruzzo. The death toll is at six but there are 23 people still missing.

According to ABC, four children and five adults were found alive on Saturday. One of the survivors, a 22-year-old university student named Giorgia Galassi, told a local radio station that they were unaware of the avalanche until it was too late.

"Everything collapsed on top of us, and I didn't understand anything anymore," she said. “We banged until I couldn't anymore, we yelled... It was like we were in a tin can.” Ms Galassi went on to say that they were trapped without food and all they had was ice which is what saved them.
