Best and Worst of the 2017 Golden Globes
Worst: Mixing up Fences and Hidden Figures
Fences and Hidden Figures are two completely different movies but that didn’t stop people from confusing two. First of all, Fences is a sobering drama about an African-American couple in Pittsburgh during the 1950s. Hidden Figures is the true account of a team of African-American women who helped NASA with important mathematical data which helped to launch the program's first successful space missions.
In one of the cringe-worthy moments of the night, Bush Hager meant to ask Pharrell Williams on the red carpet about his nomination for best original score for Hidden Figures but instead she asked about his nomination for “Hidden Fences”. Williams responds with a blank stare that took Twitter by storm. In yet another awkward moment, Michael Keaton announced the nominees for best supporting actress and when he got to Octavia Spencer, he called the movie, “Hidden Fences” which, again, is not a movie. According to Us Weekly, Keaton apologized and said he felt like “a jerk”. However, it’s hard to put it behind us when he literally announced the title Fences when listing Viola Davis’ nomination and still went on to call Octavia Spencer’s movie “Hidden Fences”. Come on, people, get it together.
Best: Donald Glover’s Win
Donald Glover is not only an award-winning actor, he is also an incredibly talented musician and comedian. The fact that Glover won the award for best actor a TV series, musical or comedy and his show Atlanta won best TV series, comedy or musical should come as no surprise. His acceptance speech brought an enthusiastic response from Twitter no just because he wore a very stylish velvet suit, but because he gave a shout out to The Migos which is the Atlanta-based group who Glover claims, “The Beatles of this generation and they don’t get a lot of respect, outside of Atlanta.” Charlamagne Tha God agreed tweeting, “Donald Glover just solidified his place in Black History. Not for winning the award but for shouting out The Migos at the #GoldenGlobes.” Legendary.
Worst: Tom Hiddleston’s Acceptance Speech
Tom Hiddleston won best performance by an actor in a mini-series or TV series for his role in The Night Manager which may be one of the least coveted awards of the night, but Hiddleston did not miss the chance to pat himself on the back. In a strange and cringe-worthy speech, he announced that he wanted to tell a quick story, saying, "I recently went to South Sudan...with the United Nations Children’s Fund. I do a little bit of work with them, try to spread the word as best I can. "One night we were having a bite to eat at the canteen, where we were staying, and a group of young men and women tottered over to the table, and we were all having what they call a 'dirty beer' in humanitarian language," he said. "They were a group of Médecins Sans Frontières doctors and nurses. And they wanted to say hello because during the shelling the previous month, they had binge-watched 'The Night Manager.'" The once titled “Boyfriend of the Internet”, now commonly referred to as Taylor Swift’s ex-boyfriend, definitely gave the most boring and self-serving speech of the night and members of the audience looked on in confusion and boredom:
