US Launches 59 Tomahawk missiles on Syria

The US has launched 59 Tomahawk missiles into Syria as a retaliation for the chemical attack that was allegedly carried out by President Assad’s regime on Tuesday. The US has warned that more will follow while Russia swiftly condemned the strike. 

President Trump ordered the attack, which according to the Pentagon targeted the airfield that allegedly held the chemical weapons that were used in the attack against a Syrian village on Tuesday. Syria’s President, Bushar Al- Assad, denied responsibility for the attack on the town of Khan Sheikhoun, a rebel held village near Aleppo.

According to Turkish officials and eyewitness statements, a banned nerve agent, Sarin, was dropped from airplanes ont0 the village killing dozens of civilians, including children and injuring hundreds more. Several hours later, a missile was dropped on a hospital that was treating the victims. 

The United States has blamed Syria’s government for the attack based on witness accounts and expert statements. Meanwhile, Russia, a supporter of the Assad regime issued a statement blaming rebel terrorist groups for the horrendous acts in Khan Sheikhoun and accused the United States government of enabling terrorist actions. President Trumped warned of more attacks should the Syrian government continue the use of chemical weapons. 

Syria’s foreign minister Walid al-Moallem issued a statement denying the attacks, while Russia has called the US attack on Syria “illegitimate” and demanded that President Trump reveal his plan for future actions in Syria. The strike has added tension to the US- Russia relationship and left world leaders scrambling to find a resolution.
