Raf Simons Has Officially Been Crowned G.O.A.T After Winning Both Womenswear and Menswear Designer of the Year
Raf Simmons was awarded designer of the year for both menswear and womenswear at Monday night’s CFDA Awards. The Calvin Klein chief creative is only the second designer ever to receive the dual honor within the same year. The other? Well that was Calvin Klein himself back in 1993.
It’s even more impressive that they’ve kept that honor in the family when you consider that Raf has been with the label for under a year. Voters are asked to consider two seasons when they’re judging collections for the honor…and Raf won off his Fall 2017 collection alone.
His debut show “Parade” was a hit at New York Fashion week, and since then he’s dressed stars like A$AP Rocky, Millie Bobby Brown, Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, and the entire cast of Moonlight for their very unique Oscar victory.
Raf also previously took home the 2014 International Award for his work at Dior. Winning twice at the CFDA’s meant that Raf got twice the acceptance speech time as well. During the menswear acceptance speech he explained that "I came to America because America is inspiring to me."
He got even more motivational during the womenswear one.
"It's our task to inspire and be an example for all the people, and I think if we as creatives can be an inspiration for how the world should look, we should take it as an important task of our existence."
Only five other designers have ever won both the menswear and womenswear categories in different years. Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, and Tom Ford have all received the honor years apart. Calvin Klein is clearly in great hands with Raf.
