Fuckin’ With the Ultimate
Sit back, don’t relax n’ grip hold of those headphones coz it’s about to get edgy.
There’s a bold sound that captivates as it insinuates. It’s as masterful as a rebellion. Wired up as tanked up, tattooed high flyer. This year its reaching its peak. Those questions you have will lead you to the answer.
Africans for ‘the answer,’ Die Antwoord is a South African hip hop-rave duo made up of Ninja and Yolandi Visser. They have been artful sound mongers of the titillating shock-music craft that has serious cult followers.
Their style oddities rack up points on punk cut hairstyles, shirtless hip hop-rap fusion and the modern trash outmodes of zef culture. Since their official debut in 2008 the band has frequently performed in English, Africans and Xhosa. Their last two albums, Donker Mag and Mount Ninji and the Nice Time Kid, reached number 1 in the US.
But it Die Antwoord is just as well-known through their dark, crazy exploration self-described documentary fiction such as the video clips ‘Fatty Boom Boom’ and the disturbing yet trance-viewing of ‘Pit Bull Terrier.’ Other hits like ‘Baby’s On Fire’ show off the appeal of the ‘innocent’ Yolandi and her quick-fire rapping style.
In 2015 their world-wide appeal blew up even bigger when they were both asked by Neil Blomkamp if they wanted to be part of the sci fi film, Chappie. The film features a sentient robot that becomes an outcast and is adopted into another harsh life by adoptive gangsters who act as parent figures. But as high as their fame has climbed, it was admitted that not all things would last forever.
This month the duo releases their final work, The Book of Zef.
Speaking about their creative output, Ninja said to a Billboard rep last year: “Music is the reason I get up in the morning, I fucking love it, but sometimes it's cool to turn something into a limited edition experience. It's quite magnificent if you can put out five fucking strong albums… We just wanna say 'those are those five Die Antwoord albums, and they never lost their erection.'”
