Spreading New Laughter
The show SNL, before the pandemic, had begun to upload more content to their YouTube page. They have playlists that consist of "This Day in SNL History", "Weekend Update", and Season sketches. Even older sketches from about 10-20 years past have been added to their content page. Within the past five years or so, they have helped cultivate a new audience through their YouTube platform. Audiences that may not have Hulu or cable to watch the show on Saturday Night, have the ability to watch sketches now. They have even used the online platform to post sketches that never made it onto the Saturday Night show. They are no stranger to the YouTube platform. The show has used this to grow their fan base and to share their content. Once the pandemic of COVID-19 came, it should not have been a surprise that the show continued through YouTube. They were already prepared.
It was less than a month after the shutdown of New York that SNL began it's 'At Home' season. They're opening guest was Tom Hanks, whose monologue consisted of him being home in his kitchen and his recovery of coronavirus. Other celebrities have taken part of the show such as Kirsten Wig, Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, and Brad Pitt. All of whom, filmed their videos from home, the same as the rest of the cast. This approach has been essential for the show to stay standing within current circumstances. Although the show may have dropped in ratings, it has remained relevant.
SNL has been known for their satire sketches they create about recent events and the world we live in. Their show now at home is no different. They are portraying the everyday individual and providing a laugh at ourselves. They film from their computer cameras and phones which are no different from us in our own work Zoom meetings. It's not far from those who have embraced the new Tiktok trends. They play on all those who now have dates over Skype and family time over FaceTime. The insanity we see through the cast, we see within ourselves. Our world has been changed forever and the cast has documented this change through satire. Their innovation to develop new content through media and platforms provides hope to adapt to the change. SNL provided a mirror to society during the election in 2016, sexual harassment in the film industry, and other major events in recent history. This pandemic may have changed how we develop entertainment, but the mirror is still there.
We cannot ignore that this new form of entertainment is not actually new. YouTube creators have long been filming, vlogging, and giving tutorials from their own home. Many of whom have their own studio set up within their own bedrooms. SNL took note. The sketches they have provided so far are similar to the comedy videos one might see from SMOSH, The Try Guys, and Jenna Marbles. Most of these creators were already filming at home, while other YouTube creators have embraced the 'Stay At Home' Order as well. YouTube has become an important platform to keep new content of entertainment streaming into our homes. SNL, in an attempt to stay relevant, took the opportunity to accept this change. Along the way, other shows have turned to filming at home to keep their content relevant. Some of these include "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon", "Jimmy Kimmel Live", and "The Late Late Show with James Corden".
There's a new normal. It consists of wearing masks to the grocery store. It encompasses hand-sanitizer at every doorway and staying six feet apart. Disney World has been closed for almost three months. Broadway will be closed until next year. Movie Theaters and malls have become vacant. States have shut down and others don't know when they will open. The new normal has become unsure how to handle jobs, the economy, and entertainment. Businesses, both small and large, have either embraced the change or fought against it. Those who have embraced it seems to be thriving, even during these uncertain times. The entertainment industry, perhaps taking the most hits with the pandemic, has not stopped. Creators and artists have not let the disturbance halt them in creating content. SNL is no exception and offers hope to adaptations to entertainment. You Can find the YouTube Channels Below:
