The Rain: a post-apocalyptic virus-based series to watch during pandemic times

In 2018, after the success of international productions such as Dark (German) and Cable Girls (Spanish), Netflix went on with a new international project: The Rain, a Danish post-apocalyptic web-television series production.

Currently with 2 seasons (14 episodes), the Rain was just confirmed to release a 3rd season with 10 episodes in May 2020. ‘The Rain’ is a drama and science-fiction series that takes place in a post-apocalyptic future.

It’s content is heavily gender related and the chaos in the plot comes from a virus. Sound a little ironic?

This sci-fiction series' plot is about the end of humanity and the survival of humanity after the appearance of a new virus. This virus that starts devastating humanity, which seems a bit scary, considering the situation we have been living in over the past few months.

However, in ‘The Rain’, the virus spreads through rainfall, which now allows us to understand the series' title. The show follows 2 main characters; the danish siblings, Simon and Rasmus, who take shelter in a bunker to survive.

6 years have gone by, without letting the rain touch them and the world hasn't found a cure or treatment for the virus yet. The siblings eventually run out of food and provisions to survive in their bunker, which makes the older sister leave (with similar protective equipment that we are required to wear in today’s real world).

She sees that everything is dead and the world is empty and bleak. But even with that on the mind, it forces the siblings to get out of their bunker and venture into this new empty world to survive.

On their way to get supplies, the siblings are ambushed by a group of 5 survivors that are also searching for supplies. They end up teaming up with one another to search for more bunkers to survive in.

The story begins to follow not only the search for other bunkers and supplies, but also the story behind each character and how they have survived. Through season 1, The Rain starts as a thriller that takes place in a dark setting.

The theme of discovering what has happened and how to fight against this threat is a bit different from the one humanity is fighting right now, in the sense that it is invisible. The key to the resolution seems to be dependent on the 2 main characters surviving in The Rain and their journey to a new life.

In season 2, the cure actually seems to be worse than the virus itself. The virus starts mutating, making it more dangerous, which intern makes the remaining survivors take extreme measures.

They even begin fighting each other, but eventually the group of main characters starts searching for a cure by themselves. Season 3 was just released in May of 2020 and is the final season for the series.

The plot follows the conditions of human survival as it starts to get worse. As the future gets darker every day, the characters discover that the answers have always been there, and everyone missed it.

Even though it may not have been the best time to see a deadly virus wipe out humanity, series like these can be addictive and entertaining to watch at home during these self-isolation times. With a stark similarity to the conditions we’re currently facing, this dramatically suspenseful series is going to keep you entertained and possibly teach you a thing or two about coping in these times.
